Excellence in Training at FMRIB
The unique strength of the FMRIB Centre, recognised world-wide, is its multidisciplinary, integrative nature that brings physical and biomedical scientists as well as clinicians together. We provide an exceptional training environment for graduates, clinicians and postdoctoral researchers, with over 44 PhDs/MDs being awarded since 1998. FMRIB has trained over 15 postdoctoral or clinical researchers who have subsequently moved onto other institutions or back into clinical work. Six have been successful in securing tenured academic jobs at other MR imaging facilities within the UK. We currently host 17 independently-funded basic science and clinical fellows, funded from MRC, EPSRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, Royal Society, DoH and CIHR and 23 post-docs funded from project grants. Several University posts have been awarded in other departments to people use primarily use FMRIB as their experimental place of work.
Our graduate training programme runs throughout the year and covers key areas of data acquisition, analysis and experimental design. This forms the formal training for all FMRIB-based graduate students and the lectures are also attended by many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from other university departments. For instance, we accept and support several students from the EPSRC-funded Life Sciences Interface Doctoral Training Centre, many of whom remain at FMRIB for their subsequent graduate research.
The Analysis Group has created a comprehensive open-source image analysis software package, FSL (FMRIB Software Library). The group holds an annual week-long residential course on FSL theory and practice, held most recently in Boston and Siena, on both occasions filling all 150 places.
