Magnet Safety Training
FMRIB policy on Magnet Safety Training
MRI scanning uses extremely strong magnets to generate images of the human body. The MRI procedure is completely safe, providing that appropriate precautions are taken to ensure that nothing that could be attracted to the magnet (i.e. ferromagnetic) is taken into the magnet room. This could include keys, watches, pens, or certain types of medical implants that a subject or researcher may have in their body.
It is therefore essential that all researchers who either work with MRI are aware of the potential risks, and the centre's procedures for minimising these risks. We require that researchers attend a magnet safety training session every year.
