Doctoral Studies
NEW: We are currently advertising a competitive DPhil studentship for 2012 entry. See the Vacancies link (left panel) for details.
If you have an interest in doing a DPhil (PhD) in the Physics Group then please
contact Peter Jezzard or
Karla Miller. Research in our group requires a first degree in engineering, physics or mathematics, and good programming skills. Particular topics of current interest are sketched below, although we are willing to discuss topics across our research interests.
Ultra-high field MRI physics: The FMRIB centre has recently sited a 7-Tesla human MRI scanner. This
instrument represents the state-of-the-art in MRI hardware, and will take
Oxford to the forefront of research in areas including RF hardware, real-time shimming and high-field contrast mechanisms.
Novel image contrast: Magnetic resonance imaging has
unprecedented flexibility in its ability to produce images with a wide
range of information about different tissues in the body. We are developing novel methods for detecting brain physiology and neuroanatomy, with particular focus on the measurement of cerebral metabolism and tissue microstructure.
Advances in mapping neural connectivity: MRI has been enormously successful at studying two complementary aspects of the living brain:
activity (functional MRI) and connectivity (diffusion). We are developing techniques to enable scientists to study currently inaccessible areas of
the brain and new acquisition techniques specifically aimed at neuronal conectivity.
FMRIB Physics students are registered in Clinical Neurosciences. Part of the admission process involves securing funds for each individual student, generally in the form of a scholarship or a doctoral programme. Below are some useful links to various funding schemes. We encourage students to discuss funding with us before applying.
Funding sources (scholarships):
- Oxford Studentship Search (select: Postgraduate (research), Medical Sciences, Clinical Neurology (Doctor of Philosophy))
- Medical Sciences Division Studentships
- Clinical Neurosciences Departmental Scholarships
- Rhodes Scholarship (various countries)
- Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Programme (Non UK Commonwealth Citizens)
