Using fMRI to study social hierarchy, self-deception and impression management
Human interpersonal interaction and communication relies on giving out and interpreting multiple subtle social cues. It is also important that individuals behave in a way which is appropriate to a particular situation. Our sense of our position within multiple social hierarchies (work, family, social groups etc.), the way in which we present ourselves to others (impression-management) and the manipulation of how we see ourselves (self-deception) are all important in facilitating successful day to day living. This talk will discuss two fMRI research studies examining the neural basis of social hierarchies, impression-management and self-deception.
